Matthew 21:6-11 (NIV)
6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. 8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,
“Hosanna to the Son of David!”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”
11 The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”
I continue to be fascinated by the word hosanna as it collides both praise and intercession. Text notes mention that it is a Hebrew expression that means “Save!” and that it became an “exclamation of praise.”
Hosanna! Jesus is the one who saves. He alone. We praise Him and thank Him and we call on Him to save. We praise and worship Him. We cry out to Him for help.
What stands out to you from this passage of Scripture?
Imagine yourself there that day as Jesus entered Jerusalem. What do you notice?
In this season of Lent, as we anticipate Easter, what are you bringing to Jesus in praise and prayer?
I have recently been reminded of and impacted by the lyrics to this song. The video is a compilation of some of the worship gatherings that Hillsong United led as they travelled at that time:
